Geothermal energy can be expected to make significant contributions to the success of the energy and heat transition at depths of 1,000m and more. One of the core tasks of the Drilling Simulator Celle (DSC) is to significantly reduce the technical and economic project risks of planned deep drilling projects for the energetic use of the geological subsurface.

The centre has a sophisticated test rig for investigating the complex deep drilling processes under realistic operating conditions. Models for calculating and optimising these processes are continuously developed in a software simulator.  Through the combined use of theoretical and experimental methods, it is possible to make valid statements about the risks involved in the energetic development of the geological subsurface and to make them recognisable and controllable at an early stage.

The research approach includes both basic research-oriented and strongly application or transfer-oriented aspects. This is reflected in the distribution of third-party funding from industry, federal ministries and European regional funding as well as the German Research Foundation.
